KEYS TO SPIRITUAL FITNESS

KEYS TO SPIRITUAL FITNESS

 Text: Lev 6:8-12, Rom 12:11, John 15:4

 INTRODUCTION:

It is very paramount to understand that keeping spiritually fit is a responsibility we must not toil with. Many have devoted most of their time to keep them physically fit but not so with their spiritual fitness. They can pay attention to their meals, the time they take them and the quantity to be taken. They also engage in various kinds of sports just to see that their bodies are in a good state of health.

But less or nothing has been done to most important aspect of their lives. When we live our lives like that, it won’t be long we will start facing all manner of spiritual sickness.

In this section am going to be giving us keys we must use to keep spiritually fit.

Let’s consider the below four simple keys:

(1) Pruning.

There must be some pruning; that is, the lopping off of fruitless branches which would hinder the living branches from bearing fruit. Our Lord spoke about this in John 15:2- “He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit.”

The more you constantly submit your life to God for thorough pruning is an indication that you’re paying attention to your spiritual fitness. Physically, a proof that you’re not or have not neglected your field is seen in how often it is being pruned. When your field is being overgrown with weeds, thorns, fruitless branches it means no one is pruning, same is applied spiritually wise. Your life ought to be constantly pruned. Don’t neglect the pruning process. It is the Lord that does the pruning work but we have to permit God to do that. Our God is not an intruder. The devil is. It is only the devil that is a thief and thieves are known to be door breakers. But Jesus said I stand at the door of your heart knocking… He will knock, you will be the one to open

Maybe God is already pointing towards some areas of your life that needs total pruning, but you’re still neglecting them. This time, have a rethink.

Say to Him O Lord prune me. Shed off the undesired branches. Cut off the useless branches in me.

Constant pruning is a sign that you are keeping spiritually fit. The more your life is being pruned the more chance you have to be a blessing to others

The dead works need to be pruned off. We cannot go far with such. Perhaps you have a dead branch in your life? Ask the Lord to take it away, to lop it off, to cut it off! – Your life being pruned by God shows that work is going on in it so is fit

(2) Provision.

If the field is to be kept in good order, nourishment and fertilization will be needed for the soil. The same is true for our souls. We can only keep spiritually fit as we know what it is to go into the secret place regularly (Matthew 6:6), and to dwell deeply in the Word of God for the nourishment of our souls (2 Timothy 2:15). How can your spirit be sustained when you’re not feeding it?

(3) Protection.

Another proof that you are keeping spiritually fit is your ability to protect your spirit all the time. If we are to take care of our inner life we need to be constantly on the lookout for the ”little foxes” which invade the vineyard and spoil the vines (Song of Songs 2:15).

The enemy is busy at every point in time to deploy his army in our lives to spoil it. What have you put in place to check him out? It is not always the big foxes; it is so often the little foxes which rob us of the power and spoil our testimony!-

It could be the little fox of excessive sleep that is destroying your life

It could be the little fox of laziness and procrastination that have invaded your life

It could be the little fox of too much talk that your life is suffering. Trust God to help you check and shake all those foxes out of your life

Protect your life. If you don’t do that, the enemy will take it over from you. Let me show you a scripture of one of those things the Lord did to us as His vineyard

Isaiah 5:1-2: Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill: And he fenced it…

The Lord Himself recognized that we are His vineyard. He fenced us with His power making it impossible for the devil to reach us, keep doing that as well.

(4) Planting.

Another thing that is expected of you to do is plant. It will be very easy for you to abandon what you have not invested in. Those that have nothing planted in their field can easily abandon it. There are so many spiritual seeds the Lord expects us to plant in our lives. They include the seed of love, compassion, purity, prayer, etc

Isaiah 5:2: And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine,

That was what the Lord did to us as His vineyard. He planted us with His choicest vine. Do the same too. It will be very hard for a farmer to abandon his farm full of plants… If you must remain spiritually fit, then begin to plant seeds in your life. The more you plant your life the more it increases in value. You can abandon your marriage and walk out of it if you have not taken time to plant it. But when you have sowed proper seeds in that marriage, it will be hard for you to abandon it. Never allow your life to be empty, plant it.

Now look at what planting your field will do for you. It will always make you to visit that field. You will always come around to either water or weed it or to even monitor the growth process of the seeds you planted. As you do all that, that field remains fit.

As you do all that, may the Lord help you from today in case you have neglected the fitness of your spirit to start doing the needful so that your life can produce good fruits for the kingdom to the glory of God.
